Hawpatch Trail Cost Estimate Released
Thursday, September 19, 2019

The first phase of a trail from Topeka to Wolcottville will cost an estimated $3.1 million dollars.

LaGrange County Trails held a meeting in Topeka Tuesday evening to share their plan with the community. That first phase would begin on the east side of Topeka and go east along property mostly owned by Norfolk Southern Railroad to County Road 75 West.

Eventually the trail would expand eastward to Wolcottville and connect with the planned Fishing Line Trail in Noble County. A westward extension would go to Millersburg and connect with the Strawberry Valley Trail of Noble County.
Negotiations with Norfolk Southern are beginning for the 17 mile planned route.

Jeff Wingstrom said “The trail will improve our county’s quality of life by
providing a safe hiking/biking trail for families, commuters, fitness enthusiasts and others. Wingstrom says donations and grants from private and government entities will be sought to fund the project.

Donations can be made through their website lagrange-county-trails-dot-org or delivered to Beth Sherman at the Lagrange County Chamber of Commerce.
