Thursday, March 23, 2023

WHITE PIGEON, MI — Authorities say a man led police on a high-speed chase through two Southwest Michigan towns before crossing the border into Indiana, where he was arrested.

The chase began at around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

Police in Michigan tried to stop a white SUV that was speeding through White Pigeon. Instead, the vehicle fled eastbound on US-12 at up to 130 mph. Multiple law enforcement vehicles followed it east through White Pigeon and Sturgis Township.

The vehicle eventually ran into stop sticks that the Sturgis Police Department had set out. It then headed south into Indiana.

White Pigeon police and deputies with the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department followed the SUV until LaGrange County Sheriff’s deputies and Indiana State Police took over.

Officers and deputies continued chasing the vehicle west on the Indiana Toll Road and then back east again, eventually stopping at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Howe.

The suspect got out and tried to run away on foot. LaGrange County deputies chased him and were able to take the suspect into custody.

The suspect, identified as a 33-year-old man from Washington D.C., was arrested and booked into the LaGrange County Jail for fleeing and eluding.

More charges from the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office and White Pigeon Police Department in Michigan are expected.

No one was injured in the chase.
