(COLDWATER) – A man has been sentenced in connection with a drug smuggling incident at the Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater.

Court officials on Monday announced that 34 year old Brandon Haggart will serve one to five years in the Michigan Department of Corrections, after pleading guilty to being a prisoner in possession of contraband. That sentence is in addition to the 7 to 15 years that he is currently serving after pleading no contest to two charges of second degree criminal sexual conduct.

The investigation into drug smuggling was started by the Michigan State Police and the Michigan Department of Corrections while Haggart was incarcerated at the Lakeland Correctional Facility. During a visit on November 29, 2022, Haggart’s mother, 65 year old Cheryl Haggart handed her son a KN95 mask which contained strips of Suboxone, which is a prescription medicine used to treat opioid addiction.

Once the visit was over, corrections officers searched Haggart and found the Suboxone. He was arrested and charged with being in possession of the drug. Officers tried to stop his mother, but she had left the prison.

A felony arrest warrant was issued for Cheryl Haggart. On August 1, the Michigan State Police 3rd District Fugitive Team located and arrested her in Midland. She was transported back to Branch County and charged with felony counts of furnishing contraband to a prisoner and bringing contraband into a prison.

Cheryl Haggart plead guilty to a felony count of furnishing contraband to a prisoner and the Branch County Prosecutor’s Office dropped a charge of bringing contraband into a prison. She is scheduled to be sentenced November 13.

Brandon Haggart is now being held in the Carson City Correctional Facility.
