Tuesday, May 28, 2024

(STEUBEN COUNTY) – A Utah man was injured after being struck by a truck.

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office was called out at 1:30 AM Sunday to State Road 127, just north of County Road 275 North for a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian. Deputies arrived and found 29 year old Mason Aelker of Payson, Utah, lying in the southbound lane of State Road 127 with a head injury.

The Steuben County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team was activated to investigate the crash. FACT consists of representatives from the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office and the Angola Police Department that specialize in crashes that potentially involve alcohol and or narcotics.

Investigators determined that 53 year old John Reuille of Fort Wayne was driving a Ford Excursion and pulling an enclosed trailer south on State Road 127. Aelker was walking south in the southbound lane, near the center line. Reuille says he was in the process of slowing down to turn west onto County Road 275 North when he saw Aelker. Reuille attempted to swerve, but struck Aelker.

Aelker was taken to Cameron Hospital, then flown by Samaritan Helicopter to Parkview Regional Medical Center and listed in critical condition. It’s believed Aelker was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

Reuille and his two passengers were not injured. Reuille voluntarily submitted to a blood draw for alcohol and narcotics, with the results pending.

The crash is still under investigation. Helping at the scene were the Angola and Fremont Police Departments, Angola Fire/Rescue and the Steuben County EMS.
