(HAMTRAMCK, MI) - General Motors is laying off more than 1,100 employees at its Factory Zero plant in Hamtramck, a move union officials say reflects shifting demand in the electric vehicle market.
The layoffs are permanent, according to UAW Local 22, which represents workers at the facility. Union leaders said the job cuts have reduced the local's membership by roughly half.
Factory Zero, located in Hamtramck, is GM's flagship electric vehicle assembly plant and plays a central role in the company's EV strategy.
Union officials said the layoffs are tied to changes in consumer demand for electric vehicles, though no additional details were provided about potential future workforce reductions or production adjustments.
GM has not released further information on whether other facilities could be affected.
