(FORT WAYNE) - As flu and COVID-19 cases climb across northeast Indiana, Parkview Health has temporarily implemented visitor restrictions to help limit the spread of respiratory illnesses inside its hospitals.

The Allen County Department of Health announced Thursday that the move comes amid a sharp increase in emergency room and clinic visits for respiratory-related symptoms.

Under the temporary restrictions, visitors must be at least 13 years old, patients are limited to no more than two visitors at a time, and all visitors are strongly encouraged to wear masks while inside Parkview facilities. Officials noted that some departments or specialties may have additional or modified restrictions based on patient needs.

"Our highest priority is keeping patients safe, especially those who are most vulnerable to severe illness," said Jeff Boord, chief quality and safety officer at Parkview Health. "We appreciate the community's understanding as we take these short-term precautions to limit the spread of flu and COVID-19 within our hospitals."

Health officials say influenza-like illness is rising statewide. According to the Indiana Department of Health, at least 17 Hoosiers have died during the current flu season, which runs from October through May.

Nationally, flu activity is also increasing. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports a more than 25% jump in positive influenza lab tests, with outpatient visits for respiratory illness rising to about 6% -- a one percent increase from this time last year.

Respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, is also contributing to hospital strain. RSV typically peaks between December and mid-February and results in up to 80,000 hospitalizations annually for children under 5 and as many as 150,000 hospitalizations for adults over 60 nationwide. The CDC reports emergency department visits for RSV are increasing in Indiana.

Anyone planning to visit a hospital is encouraged to contact the facility ahead of time to confirm current visitation guidelines.
