(LANSING) - The Michigan State Police is taking part in a nationwide effort this week to raise awareness about human trafficking.

From January 12 through 16, MSP motor carrier officers are partnering with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and Truckers Against Trafficking as part of National Human Trafficking Awareness Month.

Officers will conduct educational outreach at truck stops and meet with trucking companies, victim advocacy groups, and community organizations. The goal is to teach truck drivers and others how to recognize signs of human trafficking and report it.

The initiative targets people likely to witness trafficking activity, including commercial drivers, rest area workers, truck stop employees, and motorists.

MSP first partnered with Truckers Against Trafficking in 2015 and has since been recognized as a national leader in trafficking awareness training.

Suspected human trafficking can be reported to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center by calling 888-373-7888 or by texting BeFree to 233733.
