Hoosier Land Still a Bargain in a Pricey Market

(INDIANA) - Indiana continues to stand out as one of the best states in the country for buying land, especially for people priced out of higher-cost markets elsewhere.

New data cited by real estate experts ranks Indiana as the fifth best-valued state nationwide for land purchases. The average price per acre is about $126,300, keeping Indiana relatively affordable compared to many neighboring and coastal states.

Prices do vary widely depending on location. Lake and tourism communities, such as parts of Steuben County and the Lake Wawasee area, are among the most expensive areas in the state as demand for vacation and seasonal property continues to climb. More rural towns remain far more affordable, offering options for buyers looking outside high-demand recreational areas.

Analysts say geography and tourism play a major role in price differences, but overall affordability continues to give Indiana an edge. Data suggests the average Indiana resident could save enough to purchase an acre of land in just under eight years.

By comparison, land prices in parts of Michigan and Ohio tend to be higher in lakefront and metro-adjacent regions, making Indiana an attractive alternative for buyers seeking value without leaving the Midwest.

Experts say Indiana's combination of lower land costs and geographic variety continues to draw interest from both in-state buyers and those relocating from nearby states.
