(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana State Police is seeking qualified and compassionate individuals to serve as volunteer chaplains as part of its expanding Chaplain Program within the agency's Wellness Section.

The program is designed to support the overall health, resilience, and readiness of Indiana State Police personnel, retirees, and their families. Volunteer chaplains play a key role in providing trusted, confidential support during both routine and critical moments.

The ISP Wellness Section focuses on the physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual, and financial well-being of department members. A strong and diverse Chaplain Program is considered a vital part of that mission.

About the Chaplain Program

Volunteer chaplains provide confidential, compassionate care to personnel of all faiths or belief systems. Their work may include spiritual guidance, crisis intervention, emotional support during duty-related or personal challenges, and assistance during family emergencies or death notifications.

Chaplains may also respond to critical incidents, disaster situations, and high-stress events, participate in ride-alongs with troopers to build trust, and offer support to victims of crimes or accidents when appropriate. The program emphasizes pluralistic spiritual care that respects the diverse needs of the department.

Qualifications

Volunteer chaplains must be ordained clergy members of a recognized denomination or local church and meet at least one of the following requirements, subject to superintendent approval:

  • A Master of Divinity or equivalent graduate degree in theology, psychology, sociology, or philosophy
  • A bachelor's degree in one of those fields with at least three years of full-time active ministry experience
  • A minimum of five years of full-time active ministry experience

Duties and Expectations

Chaplains may be asked to remain on call for emergencies, provide confidential pastoral counseling, assist with Critical Incident Stress Management responses, participate in training and ride-alongs, and support departmental ceremonies or outreach efforts.
