(QUINCY) - A local Michigan lawmaker is calling for a one-year moratorium on new data centers as questions grow about their impact on local communities, energy systems and water resources.

State Rep. Jennifer Wortz of Quincy is drafting legislation that would temporarily halt approval of new data centers across the state while lawmakers gather more information and review long-term effects. Although there are currently no data center proposals in Branch County, the issue has gained attention as other Michigan counties consider similar developments.

Concerns surrounding data centers include their heavy demand for electricity and water, along with the potential for increased utility costs for nearby residents. Proposed data center projects in Kent and Ingham counties have faced public opposition, largely centered on the possibility of higher electric bills.

The proposed moratorium would give state leaders time to evaluate appropriate locations and infrastructure needs before allowing additional projects to move forward.
