(WASHINGTON) - FCA US has issued a "do not drive" warning for certain Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles with unrepaired Takata air bag recalls, urging owners to stop driving affected vehicles until defective air bags are replaced.

The automaker said approximately 225,000 vehicles in the United States remain unrepaired. More than 6.6 million Takata air bag inflators in FCA vehicles have been replaced to date.

The warning applies to specific model years of the Dodge Ram, Dodge Durango, Dodge Dakota, Dodge Magnum, Dodge Charger, Chrysler Aspen, Dodge Challenger, Chrysler 300, Jeep Wrangler and Mitsubishi Raider. Owners are urged to check whether their vehicle is subject to an open recall.

Federal safety officials say Takata air bags can explode in a crash, sending metal fragments into the vehicle cabin. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has confirmed 28 deaths in the United States linked to defective Takata air bags, along with at least 400 reported injuries. Older vehicles are considered to be at higher risk.

Recall repairs are free at authorized dealerships. Owners can check for open recalls by visiting nhtsa.gov/recalls and entering their vehicle identification number or license plate number. A mobile SaferCar app is also available to monitor recall status.

FCA customer service can be reached at 833-585-0144 for additional information.
