(BEECH GROVE) - A suspect is in custody after a shooting Monday near a Beech Grove high school left one police officer dead and another wounded, prompting a statewide Blue Alert and an extensive manhunt.

Authorities identified the fallen officer as 33-year-old Brian Elliott, a two-year veteran of the Beech Grove Police Department and former Marion County sheriff's deputy. Police say Elliott was killed in the line of duty during the confrontation. The second officer who was shot was hospitalized and is expected to survive; that officer's identity has not been released.

Investigators identified the suspect as 47-year-old Kenneth Terrell Johnson, who was arrested Monday evening by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department SWAT team. The Blue Alert had warned the public that a suspect accused of shooting officers was on the run. Officials have not released details about what led to the encounter or a possible motive.

Elliott was described by colleagues as a hometown officer who had long wanted to serve his community. Indiana Gov. Mike Braun called his death an "unimaginable loss" and offered condolences to the officer's family and fellow first responders.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, which was near a local high school, though authorities have not said whether students or staff were directly threatened. Formal charges against Johnson have not yet been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.
