(INDIANAPOLIS) - State regulators are launching a formal inquiry into why energy bills are climbing -- and what can be done to ease the burden on Hoosiers.

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission will hold a public investigative meeting at 9:45 a.m. March 24 at the PNC Center in downtown Indianapolis to examine energy affordability across the state.

Five major utilities -- AES Indiana, CenterPoint Energy Indiana, Duke Energy Indiana, Indiana Michigan Power, and NIPSCO -- are expected to present data on how rates, usage, population growth, and infrastructure costs are driving monthly bills.

Officials say the inquiry will also explore short-term solutions, including improving bill transparency and identifying ways to control costs without sacrificing reliability.

The review comes amid growing concern at the Statehouse over utility affordability. Lawmakers recently advanced legislation aimed at strengthening oversight of energy providers.

IURC Chairman Andy Zay said rising fuel costs, inflation, and infrastructure demands are putting pressure on household budgets, and regulators want to identify meaningful steps to address the problem.

Governor Mike Braun praised the effort, calling energy affordability a "kitchen-table issue" for families and businesses.

The commission will decide after the inquiry whether to take formal action. The meeting will be livestreamed for the public.
