(ANGOLA) - Trine University is mourning the loss of longtime trustee and college football legend Lou Holtz.

Holtz died Wednesday at the age of 89, according to his family.

Holtz served on Trine's Board of Trustees from 2011 to 2017 and was later named trustee emeritus.

Trine University President Earl D. Brooks II said the university was honored to have Holtz share his leadership and experience with the board and the campus community.

Holtz delivered Trine's commencement address in 2011, when the university awarded him an honorary Doctor in Public Service degree.

In 2013, Trine named its Master of Science in Leadership program after him. The program, now called the Lou Holtz Master of Science in Organizational Leadership, has graduated 369 students since it launched.

Holtz also spoke on campus multiple times, including appearances in the university's Distinguished Speaker Series and as keynote speaker at the 2019 Scholarship Gala.

His most recent visit to Trine was in 2024, when he spoke at the funeral of university namesake Ralph Trine.

Holtz is best known for leading the University of Notre Dame football program to the 1988 national championship and compiling a 100-32-2 record with the Fighting Irish.

He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009 and finished his college coaching career with a record of 249 wins.

After retiring from coaching, Holtz worked as a college football analyst for ESPN from 2005 to 2015 and authored or contributed to ten books.

He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2020.
