(NORTHEAST OHIO) - A loud boom reported across northeast Ohio Tuesday morning was likely caused by a meteor entering the Earth's atmosphere.

The National Weather Service says satellite imagery indicates the sound was the result of a meteor, not an explosion or earthquake.

The boom was reported around 9 a.m., with people across multiple states--including Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania--reporting shaking homes and a bright flash in the sky.

Experts say the sound was likely a sonic boom created as the meteor traveled at high speed and broke apart in the atmosphere.

Officials say events like this are rare but not unusual, and most meteors burn up before reaching the ground.
