(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana is landing in the lower half of the country when it comes to overall health.

A new Healthy Living States Index ranks Indiana 38th nationwide, with a score of 47.25.

The study looks at factors like life expectancy, healthcare spending, air quality, diet, exercise habits and alcohol use.

Indiana trails Illinois but ranks slightly ahead of Michigan and well above Kentucky.

Data shows Hoosiers spend more than $11,000 per person on healthcare, but still face challenges including lower life expectancy and environmental concerns.

The report also points to lifestyle factors, with moderate interest in healthy eating and fitness--but higher levels of alcohol consumption.

Researchers say states that perform best tend to balance multiple health factors, not just spending.

Hawaii ranked as the healthiest state in the nation, while Louisiana finished last.
