(NORTH WEBSTER) - The National Weather Service office in northern Indiana says March 2026 was its busiest March ever for severe weather warnings.

The office, which covers northern Indiana along with parts of southern Michigan and northwest Ohio, issued 57 severe thunderstorm warnings during the month.

That more than doubled the previous March record of 28, which had been set just last year.

The tornado warning numbers were even more extreme.

Forecasters issued 18 tornado warnings in March, nearly three times the previous record of seven and far above the office's March average of just one tornado warning.

The heaviest warning clusters included LaPorte, Starke and Marshall counties, a corridor from Warsaw to Fort Wayne, and a southern zone that included Grant, Blackford and Jay counties.

Looking ahead, the weather service says the first half of April should stay quieter, but forecasters are already seeing signs that a more active rain and storm pattern could return later this month.
