Indiana Jobless Rate Falls To 3.4 Percent In January

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana's unemployment rate fell to 3.4 percent in January, staying below the national rate of 4.3 percent.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development says the state's labor force participation rate reached 63.5 percent, compared with 62.5 percent nationally.

Indiana's total labor force now stands at 3,503,632.

The state added 10,200 private-sector jobs in January, bringing total private employment to 2,831,400.

The strongest gains came in:

  • professional and business services, up 6,800
  • construction, up 2,700
  • private education and health services, up 2,100
  • trade, transportation and utilities, up 1,700

As of the end of January, Indiana reported 85,672 open job postings statewide.

Continued unemployment claims stood at 27,470 for the week ending February 7th.
