(INDIANAPOLIS) - A new Indiana law aimed at increasing housing production now requires cities, towns and counties to review local barriers to development and publicly discuss ways to expand housing options.

On Monday, Indiana Governor Mike Braun signed House Enrolled Act 1001, which directs local governments to evaluate regulations and other obstacles that may be slowing housing construction.

Under the new law, every city, town and county in Indiana must also hold public hearings in 2026 focused on ways to increase housing supply and improve affordability.

State leaders say the goal is to reduce red tape, increase transparency and make it easier for more homes to be built across Indiana.

State Representative Tony Isa, who co-authored the measure, says unnecessary regulations and rising construction costs have priced too many Hoosiers out of the housing market.

Supporters say the law is designed to encourage development and help make homeownership more attainable.
