(AUBURN) - A cattle hauler mishap turned into an unusual interstate roundup Tuesday afternoon when three cows tumbled out of a trailer and onto I-69 near mile marker 329 south of Auburn.

The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office says the rear door of the cattle trailer came open around 5:17 p.m., sending the cows running across both northbound and southbound lanes and slowing traffic in both directions.

Deputies, state police and local officers worked with the cattle owners to contain the animals before they could create a more serious crash hazard.

Two of the cows were secured and reloaded at the scene, while the third was later found at a nearby business and safely returned to the trailer.

The interstate backup stretched through the Auburn area as crews worked to clear the roadway and safely round up the animals.
