(WATERLOO, IN) - A time capsule sealed by DeKalb County students in 1976 is about to be reopened nearly 50 years later.

DeKalb County Central United Schools says students from Waterloo Elementary, Ashley Elementary, and members of the Hudson Work and Play Club placed items into the capsule in 1976 with instructions for it to be opened during America's 250th birthday celebration in 2026.

The unveiling is scheduled for Monday, May 19 at 1 p.m. at Waterloo Elementary School.

Organizers say they are now working to reconnect with students and club members who contributed items to the capsule nearly five decades ago.

The school district says the following groups participated in the original project:

  • Mrs. Mayberry's 4th Grade
  • Mrs. Strawbridge's 3rd Grade
  • Mrs. Fritz's 4th Grade
  • Mr. Pickett's 6th Grade
  • Mrs. Eyler's 6B Grade 6
  • The Hudson Work and Play Club from 1976

Officials say items from the capsule will be digitized for historical preservation. Organizers also hope former students and club members will attend the unveiling and possibly reclaim items connected to them.

DeKalb County Central United Schools is asking the public to help spread the word so former students, families, and Hudson Work and Play Club members can be contacted before the event.

Because seating will be limited, organizers ask anyone planning to attend to RSVP in advance.
