(KENDALLVILLE) - Thirty students will get a hands-on introduction to the fire service during the inaugural Noble County Youth Fire Camp on Saturday in Kendallville.

The camp is being organized by Kendallville firefighter Jessica Fromholz-Inman and will feature 23 volunteer instructors from fire departments across northeast Indiana. Organizers say the instructors are donating their time to provide students ages 16 and older with a full day of firefighting simulations and training exercises.

Activities are scheduled to include hose and hydrant operations, ground ladder training, automated extrication demonstrations, CPR and first aid training, fire extinguisher training evolutions, and obstacle course challenges.

Students will also have the opportunity to wear turnout gear and experience working in firefighting personal protective equipment.

Organizers say the camp's participants are nearly evenly split between male and female students.

The Noble County Youth Fire Camp is scheduled for Saturday, May 23, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kendallville Fire Department Station 1, located at 307 Drake Road in Kendallville.

Matthew Latham, Public Information Officer for the Ashley-Hudson Volunteer Fire Department, said organizers hope the event will help introduce students to careers in the fire service through mentorship, training, and hands-on experiences.
