(LANSING) - A Michigan lawmaker is supporting a proposal that would temporarily suspend the state's fuel tax to lower prices at the pump.

State Representative Kathy Schmaltz of Jackson recently co-sponsored House Bill 5966, which would suspend Michigan's state gas tax on gasoline, diesel and alternative fuels.

In a statement, Schmaltz said higher fuel prices are adding pressure on families already dealing with rising costs for groceries, housing and other expenses.

Under the proposal, the state gas tax would be reduced to zero cents per gallon immediately after the bill is signed into law. The suspension would remain in place until November 1, 2026, or until the national average gas price drops below $3.50 per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Michigan drivers are currently paying 52.4 cents per gallon in state fuel taxes. Supporters of the bill say a driver filling a 15-gallon tank could save nearly eight dollars per fill-up.

House Bill 5966 has been referred to the Michigan House Appropriations Committee for consideration.
