Steuben County Opens Cooling Centers

(STEUBEN COUNTY) - Steuben County officials are encouraging residents to take precautions as hot and humid conditions settle into the region this week.

Steuben County Emergency Management has released a list of cooling centers available to residents seeking relief from the heat.


Cooling Centers

• YMCA of Steuben County, 500 E. Harcourt Road, Angola

Monday-Thursday, 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Friday, 5 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Carnegie Public Library, 322 S. Wayne Street, Angola

Monday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Tuesday-Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

• Fremont Public Library, 1004 W. Toledo Street, Fremont

Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

• Joyce Public Library, 9490 S.R. 120, Orland

Tuesday, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Wednesday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon

• Fremont Community Schools Superintendent's Office, 1100 W. Toledo Street, Fremont

Wednesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Emergency Management officials also noted that the following businesses have historically welcomed residents seeking relief from extreme temperatures during normal business hours:

• Meijer

• Rural King

• Walmart

Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day and check on elderly relatives, neighbors and others who may be vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

Pet and livestock owners should ensure animals have access to fresh water and shade throughout the heat wave.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke should seek medical attention immediately.
