(INDIANAPOLIS) - As summer wedding season gets underway, the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is reminding newlyweds about the steps required to update a name or address on a driver's license or identification card.
The BMV says anyone changing their name must first update their information with the Social Security Administration and wait at least one business day before visiting a BMV branch.
Name changes must be completed in person within 30 days. The transaction cannot be completed online or at a BMV Connect kiosk.
Applicants must provide supporting documentation, including a marriage license, divorce decree, court order approving a legal name change, or an original or certified amended birth certificate showing the new name.
Hoosiers updating their address must provide two original documents showing their name and Indiana residential address. Documents containing only a post office box are not accepted.
The BMV is also encouraging customers to upgrade to a Real ID-compliant credential if they have not already done so. Real IDs display a star in the upper-right corner, while non-compliant credentials are marked "NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES."
The requirements apply to anyone changing a name or address on an Indiana driver's license or identification card.
