Indiana Unemployment Rate Holds At 3.3% In August

INDIANAPOLIS (WLKI)- Indiana's unemployment rate was 3.3% in August, while the state added 4,000 private-sector jobs from the previous month, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

The state's August unemployment rate was lower than the national unemployment rate of 4.1% reported for July.

Indiana's labor force participation rate was 63%, compared with a national rate of 61.6%. The participation rate measures the share of residents age 16 and older who are either working or actively looking for work.

The state reported a total labor force of 3,488,019 people in August. Total private employment stood at 2,843,800.

Manufacturing led the monthly employment gains, adding 3,500 jobs. Other industries with increases included all other services, up 3,000 jobs; leisure and hospitality, up 1,200 jobs; and professional and business services, up 800 jobs.

As of Aug. 30, Indiana had 102,895 open job postings statewide. The Department of Workforce Development also reported 17,551 continued unemployment insurance claims for the week ending Sept. 5.
