INDIANA (WLKI)- Indiana State Police is accepting applications for Motor Carrier Inspector positions at permanent commercial vehicle scale facilities in Fort Wayne, Lowell, Seymour and Terre Haute.
Motor Carrier Inspectors enforce state and federal regulations governing commercial vehicles operating in Indiana. Their work can include conducting truck inspections, responding to crashes and helping ensure compliance with safety and hazardous-materials regulations.
Candidates selected for the positions will attend a paid, 10-week Motor Carrier Inspector School scheduled to begin March 15, 2027. Training will combine academy-style instruction in Indianapolis with on-the-job training.
The academy portion will be held Monday through Friday at the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division in Indianapolis, with housing provided for trainees. Training topics will include emergency vehicle operations, defensive tactics, communications, hazardous materials, first aid, post-crash investigations and truck inspections.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 21 years old by March 15, 2027, have a high school diploma or equivalency diploma, and possess a valid driver's license.
Applicants will also be required to pass a physical agility test, oral interview, polygraph examination and background investigation. Medical and psychological examinations, as well as a drug test, are also required. Indiana State Police said proximity to the assigned scale facility may be considered during the selection process.
Trainees will receive pay and necessary equipment during the inspector school. Starting annual pay is listed at $52,000, increasing to $54,000 after the first year. The agency said inspectors can reach an annual salary of $70,000 over 10 years through step increases. Retirement benefits are available through PERF.
