ANGOLA, Ind. (WLKI)- Steuben County is asking residents to review and comment on its updated Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan before the public comment period closes later this month.

The county prepared the update in cooperation with the City of Angola and the towns of Ashley, Clear Lake, Fremont, Hamilton, Hudson and Orland.

The plan identifies risks and vulnerabilities from known natural, technological and political hazards. It also outlines proposed projects focused on prevention, property protection, natural resource protection, emergency services, structural controls and public information.

Federal law requires communities to update their mitigation plans every five years to remain eligible for future mitigation funding through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The goal is to identify risks and prepare for disasters before they occur, reducing their potential physical, social and economic effects.

The draft plan is available during regular business hours at the Carnegie Public Library in Angola, Fremont Public Library, Joyce Public Library in Orland and the Steuben County Emergency Management Agency office at 205 South Martha Street in Angola.

It is also available online through Steuben County Emergency Management.

Comments must be submitted by Friday, Oct. 16, to EMA Director Lee Greenamyer.
