(FREMONT) - An off-duty Steuben County sheriff's deputy helped lead investigators to a vehicle theft arrest last fall.

According to kpcnews.com, the deputy was pumping gas at a Fremont station when he noticed a GMC Acadia he recognized -- but the driver didn't match the vehicle's owners. After contacting the couple, the vehicle was reported stolen.

Police reviewed security video from the gas station and identified the suspect using prior records. That led to the arrest of 39-year-old Dale Mason III of Camden, Michigan.

Mason is charged with felony motor vehicle theft. If convicted, he could face up to two-and-a-half years in prison and a ten-thousand-dollar fine.
